Imperative Sentences


1. Definition

An imperative sentence is a sentence used to give commands, instructions, advice, warnings, suggestions, or requests.

 3. Structures of Imperative Sentences

a.      Positive Imperative : Verb 1 + object/complement
Examples:

Close the window.

Write your name.

b.      Negative Imperative : Don’t + Verb 1
Examples:

Don’t talk loudly.

Don’t run here.

c.       Imperative with “Please” : Please + Verb 1
Examples:

Please open your book.

Please wait for me.

d.        Imperative with “Let’s” (Suggestion for “Us”) : Let’s + Verb 1
Examples:

Let’s go home.

Let’s study together.

  • Do (your best, the exercises…)
  • Don’t (forget, leave, shout…)
  • Let’s (begin, eat, try…)

  • Read the text carefully.
  • Don’t cheat during the test.

  • Heat the pan.
  • Add the sugar.
